Roof rats are a hassle to deal with and can cause you a lot of harm and unneeded financial strain. Several cities across the state have had to deal with them, and their infestations have gotten so bad that they’ve had to warn their residents about the dangers of these small mammals. But what are roof rats , and how big of a deal can they really be?

That’s a Rat!

Roof rats look incredibly similar to your everyday rat- small, furry creatures with a tail that scamper around in your yard, through your walls, and on your roof. In contrast to regular rats, you might notice roof rats having big ears and even larger tails. They move very quickly, can climb trees, and can cause a lot of damage to your home and property. They can eat through plastic, aluminum, sheetrock , and even drywall to find their way into your attic, and can even transmit dangerous diseases. It’s important to deal with roof rats as soon as you notice them, to avoid both having to replace your attic and coming down with Typhus.

Telltale Signs of Roof Rats

There are lots of easy ways to tell if you’ve been struck by the roof rats. If you’ve seen them around, that’s a solid clue- but if your pets are also acting strange or you’re hearing noises from the attic, it’s not your neighborhood Casper. Instead, it might be Roof Rats making your home theirs.

If you see them hanging out in the neighborhood, usually on powerlines, roofs, or patios, that’s also a good sign that your home is the next to get hit.

Roof Rat Control

If you suspect your house is about to get hit with a visit by the roof rats, there are several ways to keep them out of your attic. Pick up any food left in the yard, even pet food, and cover your trash cans tightly. Prune your trees and your shrubs, and replace any screens on your doors and windows as soon as they’re broken.
